Profile Information

About Me:
I'm a music teacher in Anchorage, Alaska. Born and raised in the midwest, I moved out here to experience the mountains and all the beautiful outdoors.
Birthday:
August 20, 1985
Why I'm involved in Venture Expeditions:
I am going on the Underground Railroad trip because I recently became aware of Jesus' mandate for social justice. The plight of the modern-day slaves is something that God has laid on my heart, so though I do not know the first thing about biking for 100 miles a day, I'm going to learn.

Alabama heat is very different from Alaska

I know that some people have been checking in, waiting for me to post about our travels, so I will try to get y'all caught up to date. We are here in the deep south, and I'm doin' my best to adopt the southern accent, so we'll see if it gets incorporated into my writtin'.

Our team assembled one week ago today in Mobile, AL. We had a few days to get to know each other, learn the rules of the road, learn more about the work of International Justice Mission, and get in a training ride… Continue

avoiding catastrophy, one shoe at a time

So, some people have this thing called wisdom. Those are the people that do their research and ask lots of questions before they try new things. And then, there's the rest of us. =o)

As I got my new bike about 3 weeks ago and have been testing the waters of clipless pedals, it's been pretty smooth sailing thus far. Everyone warned me that I would fall over at least once and that it would be in a very public and embarrassing place. So I was prepared for that aspect of new pedals, even… Continue

Spring traning in Alaska

I must admit that I was a bit grumpy this morning when I woke up to this.

All our snow wasn't gone yet by any means, but an extra 6-8 inches didn't help anything. So there goes my hopes of getting out on a bike again soon. So as I was being very grumpy about the beautiful snow, I called my parents and started talking about the bike trip. I am so excited for this summer! I hardly know my fellow tour-mates, but I found myself excitedly… Continue

My first outdoor ride of the season

As most of you know, I'm currently living in Anchorage, Alaska. This is my 3rd spring here, and thus far I think the snow has stuck around the longest. Right now there's an entire winter's worth of accumulation outside. It's melting slowly with nice warm 40-degree days and 13+ hours of sunlight currently. Anyway, enough about the snow. Friday was a spectacularly beautiful 40 degree day without a cloud in the sky and negligible breezes. After finishing the school day, I escaped as quickly as… Continue

Haha, one of my fond memories from university was using the lawn infront of our residnece library as a big slip and slide! Late one rainy and warm night, 6 of us went out to a 6" (that's right, not much point in using centimeters around me, I convert it to inches so I can better understand it, I use a mix mash of both systems) puddle, and began charging at it then sliding through it. In then end we just started splashing water at each other and wrestling in the, by that time, muddy puddle! We were covered head to toe with grass throughout, and just jumped in the shower clothes and all! Much fun! Yeah, I sure do have a lot of fond memories of various times playing in the rain friends, or just out enjoying it on my own!

Thanks for the welcome Merry! Training is going great! But actually, I don't really consider it much training, as more so just biking, cause I'm not doing any more than my regular biking currently. I am very thankful for my bikes, as they are my transportation for work each day. It's been such wonderful weather for the past month and a bit for biking now! The snow has been gone a while, accept the odd place where the remains of large piles still mask the ground. Although I enjoy the snow for snowmobiling, I was very excited when it left as I greatly missed the quiet peacefulness of the two wheeled machine! Definitely the snow and ice can pose some great threats! Ah, and then as it warmed up a bit more and the birds began chirping more along my way, I was delighted to be out there basking in the sunshine with them. But then again, on the way home from work it has often been dark by the time I'm on the road. Have been putting in some longer hours for a large installation job we currently have at a bakery in Toronto. So the past few days I have not made it out biking here in the city yet. I'm hoping to get out in the next few days and do some exploring.

So what sort of music do you teach Merry? What grades? Did you know any one in Alaska when you first went out there, or just went on a wild adventure?

Hey Merry! Thanks so much for your message. It's so nice to know that someone else is in a similar boat in terms of training. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Don't worry, I wouldn't say you're behind at all. Last year I started training around this time and felt pretty well prepared for the tour. What was the surgery for (if you don't mind me asking)? Haha, I guess Alaska can't be beautiful all the time. Over here we get the nice greenery during winter and spring, but then everything is dry and brown in summer and fall.

I'm doing pretty good, starting training as well but having trouble motivating myself to get out on longer rides. I just spent the weekend with my mom in wine country, tasting wine, cheese, and olive oil, so that was fun. Now I'm just getting excited for the summer!

I like to welcome peeps...not sure if it is official title though. I have hiked the Superior Hiking Trail, the Himalayas in Bhutan, and Pikes Peak. I have bicycled across Thailand, the East Coast, and Cross-Country on the Ride:Well Tour, so a couple trips on my resume. How are you doing? You excited for this summer?
