There was something unexpected and strange about our route to the summit of Kilimanjaro: For almost the entire journey, we could not see the end. The goal was not within sight.

Verbs like "trudge" come to mind. Even though we could not see the finish line, we trudged onward. And though we are prone to wander, our guides saw that each of us made it to the very end.
